February 2014 Event

Love and Permanence

Phyllis Shacter will speak about the five unusual choices her husband, Alan, made during the last 18 months of his life. This included Alan’s choice to not follow conventional surgical protocol to treat laryngeal cancer; his choice to use naturopathy and focused intention to successfully heal from the cancer; his choice to create and attend his own funeral; his choice to not live in a dementia facility; and his final choice to consciously leave his body by not eating and drinking rather than living into the late stages of Alzheimer’s Disease.

Phyllis and Alan's partnership continues today with their regular communication. Phyllis will share some of their communication with us. They are now working together with a team to broaden the perspective about the choices available to people leading up to and during the dying process.

How Alan and Phyllis navigated this journey provides relevant information for us all as we examine our own lives and choices. This talk will be more meaningful to you if you watch Phyllis Shacter’s TEDxBellingham talk that she gave on Nov. 12, 2013, called “Not Here By Choice.” If you can, please watch this before the BIONS talk. You can use the link below.

Phyllis Shacter began making unconventional lifestyle decisions when she attended U.C. Berkeley at 16 years of age during the Free Speech Movement. After college, she made pioneering choices, including living in an intentional community for much of her 20s and 30s. Her careers include 10 years as a teacher and school administrator, 12 years as the founder and owner of a business and technology firm and 12 years as a life and business coach (www.lifeandbizcoaching.com). Phyllis is a teacher of living creatively and boldly, and is committed to educating people about more conscious ways of living and dying.
