Philip Damon was active from the late fifties to the early seventies in anti-war and pro-civil rights causes until withdrawing in discouragement from political activity in 1972. Influenced by eastern spirituality in 1976, he incorporated a new range of practices into his personal life and his academic approach to literature (University of Hawaii ), creating courses in Mysticism in Literature, Man and God, and others. From the early nineties till the present he has taught non-university workshops he calls “Living the Story,” which combine the principles of narrative with the “perennial philosophy” of spiritual wisdom.
(In 1994 he made a presentation to BIONS on this topic.)
Now politically active once again, he works from the premise that the core wisdom of all spiritual traditions and a genuine “living” democracy share the practice commonly referred to in sacred texts as “opening in the heart.” This insight enables one to see and feel that spirituality and democracy are resonant impulses. They are, in fact, mutually empowering, not only for the individual practitioner, but for society at large.
