13 Indigenous Grandmothers, shamans and medicine women from around the world have been called together to share their sacred wisdom and practices.

Can they light the way for us to a peaceful and sustainable planet?

In 2004, thirteen Indigenous Grandmothers from all four corners, moved by their concern for our planet, came together at a historic gathering, where they decided to form an alliance: The International Council of Thirteen Indigenous Grandmothers. This is their story.


Four years in-the-making and shot on location in the Amazon rainforest, the mountains of Mexico, North America, and at a private meeting with the Dalai Lama in India, For the Next 7 Generations follows what happens when these wise women unite. Facing a world in crisis, they share with us their visions of healing and a call for change now, before it's too late. This film documents their unparalleled journey and timely perspectives on a timeless wisdom.

How can we access information beyond our own psyche? What are the procedures and techniques for connecting ourselves to inner wisdom?

BIONS Community Group is pleased to host an evening with Lia Ayley, who will lead us through an exploration of "inner knowing," or intuitive consciousness - direct and immediate access to knowledge beyond what is available to our normal senses and the power of reason.

      Lia Ayley is a British-trained psychotherapist specializing in psychosynthesis, humanistic and integrative psychotherapy, and transpersonal and clinical hypnotherapy. She was in private practice in London for 12 years before moving with her family to Bellingham 11 years ago. In 1991, while in Greece, she experienced a powerful connection to a source of higher wisdom that prompted her to commit to a regular meditation practice in order to further develop the skill of accurately translating the information she received into words. Lia now practices as a hypnotherapist in Bellingham, and she also offers courses teaching others to receive and interpret higher guidance accurately.

Every living thing dies. This we know, yes? But what is death?
Do we just disappear into nothingness, or is there an afterlife?

We’ll spend an evening together, looking deeper into these provocative topics of death, afterlife, and soul. We’ll view a film offering studies and explorations by experts in the field, and we’ll have the opportunity for our personal exploration through sharing and discussion. Hopefully, we’ll leave the evening with lighter hearts and perhaps, even more questions. And for starters, here’s something to ponder: How differently might we live our lives if we knew and lived from the knowledge that we are all immortal souls of light? What might life on planet Earth look like then?

Laura Winds is a licensed counselor and a trained IADC (induced after death communication) therapist. She has taught college level courses in the field of psychology and has been a counselor for over twenty-five years. With the death of her son in 1982, Laura embarked on a personal journey of grief and loss. She has found her recent work with IADC to be deeply affirming and healing on many levels. It has addressed her lifelong interest in understanding death, dying, and conscious living.

You are invited to explore what art offers leadership in this experiential and informative workshop.

Who is missing in the following scenario? The U.S. President has called in advisors to help figure out how to respond to an urgent situation. Clustered in the Oval Office are trusted military advisers, political advisers, economic advisers, and legal advisers. Privately, before the meeting, the President sought religious counsel.

Artists are absent from the meeting. Few leaders recognize artists as a source of expert advice in responding to situations that arise in their communities and organizations. Society values artists for the objects and entertainment they create, but the knowledge and experience of art are generally considered irrelevant to solving 'real world' problems. The practice of art is not known for having practical applications.

Today humanity is facing situations - economic instability, terrorism, religious discord, food insecurity, water shortages, climate change, pollution, and eco-system collapse - that are not entirely amenable to political, economic, and military solutions. We need creative solutions.
Learn how the experience and knowledge of art can help leaders develop creative solutions to the situations we face globally.

Skye Burn and Doug Banner work with The Flow Project, centered in Bellingham. The Flow Project works with artists to identify principles of art and artistic practices common to the artistic experience across mediums, and works with leadership educators to translate the principles of art into principles of leadership and leadership practices.

Skye Burn: Executive Director, The Flow Project, integrating art and leadership by giving leaders access to the experience and acumen of art; and giving artists a voice in creating a well-led global community. Skye is internationally published in the field of cultural research, an award-winning poet, illustrator, woodworker, seasoned community organizer, and consultant to organizations in leadership and vision development; Fellow, UNESCO Chair for Comparative Studies of Spiritual Traditions, Their Specific Cultures, and Interreligious Dialogue, housed at St. Petersburg Branch of the Russian Institute for Cultural Research; board member, Center for Intercultural Dialogue, University of Oregon, home of the UNESCO Chair for Transcultural Studies, Interreligious Dialogue, and Peace; a founding member of the Bellingham Compassion Movement; and a board member of the Compassionate Action Network, Seattle.

Doug Banner: Flow process Team Leader 
Doug has been an advocate for positive change during his entire career as an Educator and community activist. Now retired, he continues to teach at Western Washington University. He works in community with groups such as the Bellingham Compassion Movement, The Bellingham Storytellers Guild, and the Nu Wa International Peace Delegation. Doug's knowledgeable use of story to promote change at all levels of our lives is well recognized, and he often is called upon to give keynotes and workshops.

Jun was born in Tokyo, moved to Seattle in 1978. He was in graduate school studying ethnomusicology at the University of Washington in the 80’s, but reading more philosophy, psychology, quantum physics, Joseph Campbell, etc. He worked as an interpreter, consultant and writer in agriculture in the 90’s. He has been involved with music business, alternative health, and film production companies since.

He is also very active on Facebook. He created a Facebook group, Imaginal Cells in Dec, 08, which has over 2400 members worldwide.

Join Chris Wolf and Tom Anderson for an evening of local inspiration. Both members of Transition Whatcom, Chris and Tom will provide a brief update on Peak Oil, Climate Change, and Economy, report on the work Transition Whatcom has performed since they last presented to BIONs in May, and share what's in store next for the organization. Chris and Tom will conclude the program by leading a visioning exercise for the future.

Transition Whatcom's vision is creating resilient and more self-reliant communities throughout Whatcom County with a local food supply, sustainable energy sources, a healthy local economy, and a growing sense of vitality and community well-being.

Chris Wolf was born and raised in Bellingham and has a deep love for this land,its history, and its communities. Chris got excited about the Transition movement at the BIONs presentation last winter, and has since become a member of the Transition Whatcom initiating group, coordinating with her neighbors to start a gardening club and Transition York Neighborhood. Chris is a Permaculturist, counselor, nature lover, and community activist. If she has not gotten rid of her car by the time you read this, give her a hard time about it.

Tom Anderson is currently a self employed consulting engineering working in Whatcom County. He was the general manager of Public Utility District #1 of Whatcom County from 1989 until early 2006. Tom was born and raised in Stanwood, his mother from Bellingham and his father from Sedro Woolley.

Timeless understandings and practices developed by Gestalt Therapy founders, Fritz and Laura Perls in the 1940s, are more relevant now than ever. Getting in touch with not only our 5 senses but our 6th sense as well, begins to expand our inner being and knowing. Most of us have been raised to distract ourselves from these inner awarenesses. We'll explore these distractions and then put them in a big box….And then we'll hang out in the here and now for awhile…without an agenda!

Time willing, we'll explore the Creative Void, the Impasse, a phenomenon we all face repeatedly, often out of awareness. This state of mind occurs when we feel stuck between here and there, or this and that.

So come join us for an experiential evening of learning and fun.

Cyndy Sheldon, MSW, who studied with the founders of Gestalt Therapy, Fritz and Laura Perls, began the original Gestalt Institute of San Francisco in the 60s and taught there as well as in Europe for many years. Later in Arizona, while learning from traditional Navajos, she deepened her appreciation for these timeless understandings. Now she is eager to share the integration of these experiences with those who are curious and interested.

Join BIONS and facilitator Leslie Shankman on Thursday, November 19th to learn the true meaning of the Mayan Calendar as interpreted by leading expert Carl Calleman. In his work, Calleman has brought alive the understanding that the Mayan Calendar tracks how human consciousness is evolving through time.

We'll watch a 55 minute DVD, Mayan Calendar Core Training: Evolution of Consciousness, created by two of Calleman's students, Andi Mac and Jag Stewart, (www.mayan-calendar-code.com) that explains what the Mayan Calendar is timing…

Discussion following the DVD will be facilitated by Leslie Shankman who has been an avid student of the Calendar since first hearing Dr. Calleman speak in 2005.

Leslie says of the DVD:
I first saw this DVD about 3 years ago and in one hour it provided a context for everything. The picture it painted has given me a great deal of peace and an important lens on how to view the changes we are going through collectively and personally. Mary and Brita lived and worked for a number of years in the Findhorn Foundation, an education center in the north of Scotland. Findhorn, with several hundred community members, founded in 1972, is one of the oldest and largest New Age-oriented spiritual communities in Europe. This ecovillage includes extensive organic farming, wind and solar power, a natural waste water processing facility, and an educational facility hosting weekly and monthly residential programs in personal and spiritual growth. Findhorn Foundation organizes international conferences on topics such as environmental issues, intuitive development, social and organizational development and typically receives several thousand visitors per year.

The center is grounded in the principles of deep inner listening and acting from the source of one’s own inner wisdom; co-creation with the intelligence inherent in nature; and service to the world.

Mary was a key player in building up the international network that is an integral part of Findhorn’s service to the world. Brita served as a workshop leader and conference organizer.

In this session, participants are invited to try out a typical “attunement” that begins a working day in Findhorn, along with other exercises and meditative dancing that is part of daily life in Findhorn.

Transition Whatcom (TW) is a group in Whatcom County developing a 20-year local "Energy Descent Action Plan."
TW promotes greater community resilience in the face of climate change and economic instability, "reskilling" residents to learn practical skills that will be useful in a powered-down, less energy-intensive future.

Cindi and Rick invite us to discuss how we as a local community can define and meet most of our essential needs, to be better prepared to withstand economic shocks. Transition Whatcom outlines how Whatcom County can meet the basic needs of all its residents in terms of food, housing, transportation and security. TW engages residents from all walks of life; honors the wisdom and experience of the elders who have much to teach about self-reliance and living simply; and honors and learns from the First Nation peoples who hold in their hearts the value of, and reverence for, the gifts of the earth.

Transition Whatcom is driven by great affection for this place we call "home", and by our concern for future generations.

Rob Hopkins, who helped launch the Transition Town movement in the U.K., says "The Transition Towns movement has grown so fast because it is positive in a time where it is hard to find positivity, solutions-based in a time when the problems are so glaringly obvious, and fun, in a time where we're not supposed to have time for that any more."
We used immense amounts of creativity, ingenuity and adaptability on the way up the energy upslope, and that there's no reason for us not to do the same on the downslope.
If we collectively plan and act early enough, there's every likelihood that we can create a way of living that's significantly more connected, more vibrant and more in touch with our environment than the oil-addicted treadmill that we found ourselves on today.

In keeping with our theme of being the change we want to see, we are presenting this movie, examining social justice and the ramifications of subconscious beliefs about race and culture. "Last Chance for Eden" is a sequel to "The Color of Fear," also directed by Lee Mun Wah, which we showed last year. With Barack Obama as our president and our "first family" being not all-white, we are entering into a paradigm shift of as yet unfathomable depth! This movie is set to expand our awareness in regards to this shift.

Last Chance for Eden is a documentary featuring eight men and women discussing the issues of racism and sexism in the workplace. They examine the impact of society's stereotypes on their lives in the workplace, in their personal relationships, and within their families and communities. In the course of their dialogue, they also explore the differences and similarities between racism and sexism – an area that has seldom been researched, but has heatedly become an important issue needing to be understood and addressed.

The cast was painstakingly selected from a large pool of interesting and dynamic applicants.

After the movie we will have a sharing and discussion - bring your stories and your ideas!

We are living during what may be the largest social movement of all time -- millions of people and organizations around the world are recognizing that our current ways are not working. People are coming together to create a new world defined by environmental sustainability, social justice and spiritual fulfillment.

November's BIONS meeting looks at a potent tool that is available to catalyze our broader community into directed conscious actions that create and support a new collective vision.

Over a decade ago, the unlikely joining of several North American business people with a remote “dream culture” tribe living deep in the Ecuadorian jungle created a venture crucial to each party. This joining, The Pachamama Alliance, continues to birth many initiatives and deep change.

The Pachamama Alliance has developed a Symposium that is now being presented world-wide. Called Awakening the Dreamer, Changing the Dream, the Symposium is the topic of this evening's BIONS meeting. Stunning audio/visual material and interactive processes provide insight into the depth and breadth of the Symposium as a resource and catalyst.

We are fortunate locally to have eight Facilitators trained by the Pachamama Alliance. These facilitators are available (on a volunteer basis) to help organizations raise awareness and create change through presenting the Symposium in your living room, your business, church, synagogue, classroom, club, or organization.

Come participate in this overview of the Symposium and open your imagination to how and where you might invite collaborative vision and change into your life.

Pauline Hillaire, a renowned Lummi Elder, comes from the oral tradition. At the age of 79, she says, "I need to share all the knowledge I have." Her passion for what is happening to our world is profound. Pauline will be speaking to us about A Blueprint for Living, based on the Lummi value system, something she is eager to share.

Pauline has authored a couple of books, taught at numerous places, including Northwest Indian College, and is a storyteller, basket-maker, historian, philosopher, genealogist, and interpreter of totem poles. And she sings, dances and writes poetry as well. And perhaps there is more! We hope you will join us for this special evening.

**Joanna Macy, "has developed an international following over the course of 40 years as a speaker and workshop leader on Buddhist philosophy, systems theory and deep ecology. She is the author of many books, the most recent being: COMING BACK TO LIFE: Practices to Reconnect Our Lives, Our World". Joanna coined the concept The Great Turning some time ago, and her friend David Korten used it as the title of his important book.
